Israeli Market Adventure

Yesterday I talked about my own "culinary" adventure. But I realized I hadn't actually posted about my real one...It's been a while since my wonderful trip to Israel - over two months to be exact. However, tonight I'm having dinner with some friends from the trip and so I wanted to share some pictures to remember it.

Of course, I have tons of pictures of me with friends and my sister, however, I thought it most appropriate here to share some great food shots. All of these ones are from the Jerusalem "Sabbath" market. Basically, everyone piles into the market on Friday afternoon so that they can buy all of their weekend / dinner supplies before the Sabbath. On Friday night (sundown) through Saturday (sundown) no work is done and you can't buy any groceries as money can't be exchanged. From where we stayed, the streets were also almost completely quiet.

My favorite part of the Sabbath tradition though is that they eat a TON of food. The Orthodox Jews who visited with us even described the obligation to eat (and drink) well and enjoy each other's company. Now I know that all of us have different religious beliefs, but I can sure get behind that one! Though I'll take it any night of the week :)

Laura (my sister) and I even managed to buy some stuff while we were there. We got a couple of these dolmas which were DELICIOUS. Sigh...I'm even starting to miss all of the Shawarmas we ate...

this reminds me of my trip to Israel 8 years ago and having olives for breakfast. and how so many americans just found it strange, but I absolutely loved it. Great pictures!
